Become a Real Estate Broker
In order to become a Real Estate Broker in the state of California you are required to successfully complete eight DRE-approved courses and then pass the Broker State Exam. Real Estate Broker License Requirements
Real Estate Brokers are licensed by the California Department of Real Estate (DRE) to represent the public in the purchase, sale, or lease of real property, or a business opportunity, for compensation.
In order to get a Broker license you must pass the DRE-administered Broker State Exam. In order to qualify for the Broker State Exam, you must have either two years of full-time experience as a Salesperson within the last 5 years, or a 4-year degree (major or minor) in Real Estate. Additionally, you must complete a total of eight courses. (Real Estate Trainers offers the bold-typed courses.)

Exceptions

- *Note: Although many Sales agents have already completed the Practice course before 2024, you must re-take this course in order to comply with the new DRE regulation displayed below:
- Effective January 1, 2024, any real estate practice course submitted for purposes of qualifying to take a real estate license exam, must include components on implicit bias and fair housing. Additionally, the fair housing component must include an interactive participatory component where the applicant role plays as both the consumer and the real estate professional.
- Legal Aspects of Real Estate
- Real Estate Finance
- Real Estate Appraisal
- Either Real Estate Economics or Accounting*
- Plus, any three of the following electives:
- Property Management
- Escrow and Title
- Real Estate Office Administration
- Real Estate Principles
- Business Law
- Mortgage Loan Brokering & Lending
- Adv. Legal Aspects of Real Estate
- Adv. Real Estate Finance
- Adv. Real Estate Appraisal
- Common Interest Developments
- Computer Applications in Real Estate

- Members of the California State Bar are exempt from the course requirements, but must meet the 2 years of experience or a 4-year college degree with a major or minor in real estate.
